Bruce Armstrong

Sculpture | Painting | Drawing

One of Australia’s most acclaimed sculptors, Melbourne-based Bruce Armstrong is best-known for his monumental totemic figures which can be seen in public spaces around the country. Often hewn from massive pieces of red-gum, his birds, beasts and figures have a raw energy which assert a commanding presence and engage directly with the viewer.

Born in 1957, Bruce Armstrong trained in fine art at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, graduating in 1981. He is perhaps best known for his monumental animal sculptures found in public spaces in Melbourne. His work is also represented in collections including the National Gallery and National Portrait Gallery in Canberra, The National Gallery of Victoria and The Art Gallery of New South Wales. In 2011 the Ray Hughes Gallery published 'Bruce Armstrong, Now and Then' a survey of the artist's works on paper 1982 - 2011.
